What’s in a Vook? Step 1: Selecting & Curating Books
Before animation. Before narration. Before music. Every Vook begins the same way: with a book in our hands, read out loud.
In this first installment of our What’s In a Vook? series, we’re taking you behind the scenes of the very first step in our process: selecting and curating the stories that become Vooks animated storybooks. Because in a world overflowing with content, choosing the right story is everything.
Choosing Children’s Books for Vooks: Why We’re So Selective
There are millions of children’s books in the world, but only a small fraction ever become Vooks. That selectivity is intentional. Each animated storybook takes four to six months to create; every illustration, sound, voice performance, and musical decision is crafted with care. Because we invest so much time into each bringing each title to life, we can only produce a limited number each year.
Therefore, every “yes” has to truly matter. We’re not looking for just another book. We’re looking for stories worth becoming part of a child’s memories.
What Makes a Book a Great Vook?
A Strong Story at Its Core
Everything starts with the foundation: a story that works beautifully on the page. If a book feels complete, emotionally resonant, and compelling in its original form, that gives us something solid to build on. A strong narrative arc, meaningful themes, memorable characters—these elements make adaptation possible without losing integrity.
We’re especially drawn to stories with heart. Books that stir something inside you. Stories that build resilience, spark laughter, or quietly shape character. Because while literacy matters, emotion is what makes a story unforgettable.
A Book That Reads Beautifully Aloud
Storytime is meant to be spoken. That’s why we read every potential title out loud—often more than once. This is especially important for rhyming books, where rhythm and pacing can make or break the experience. We listen carefully:
- Does it flow naturally?
- Are there awkward phrases that might interrupt immersion?
- Does it feel good in the mouth and ear?
If it doesn’t feel right read aloud, it won’t feel right as a Vook. Even during this stage, we begin imagining how it might sound in its final form—what kind of voice would bring it to life, where pauses should linger, and how the emotional beats might land.
Characters and Visuals That Can Come to Life
Some stories instantly spark the question: How might this move? We look for characters that children can connect with and visuals that lend themselves to thoughtful animation. Illustration style also plays a role in our decision-making. Highly detailed, realistic art may call for subtle animation paired with rich sound design. More playful, stylized illustrations may allow for greater movement with a lighter musical touch. Our goal is always balance. We don’t animate for the sake of movement—we animate to serve the story.
Sometimes the most surprising books become favorites. One unexpected fan favorite, Opposites, features mostly single words paired with clay illustrations. There’s no traditional storyline, but when voice, animation, music, and sound design came together, it became something quietly magical. Complexity isn’t what makes a story powerful. Feeling is.
Securing Rights: The Invisible Work Behind Every Vook
Discovering a book we love is only the beginning. Our team spends hours in children’s bookstores, searching for new releases and hidden gems. But once we find a title we believe in, we begin the careful process of securing rights from the publisher, author, and/or illustrator. This process can take weeks—or sometimes years.
It matters deeply to us that this is done well. Authors and illustrators often spend months or even years perfecting every word, every brushstroke, every page turn. Any adaptation must respect that craftsmanship and original vision.
When a story finally arrives on Vooks, it represents collaboration. We want the rights holders, our team, and most importantly, the child experiencing the story to feel that it was worth the effort.
Vooks and the Physical Book: An Extension, Not a Replacement
One thing we hold closely throughout our selection process: Vooks is never meant to replace the physical book.
Our animated storybooks are designed to be an extension—a new way to experience a beloved story. In many cases, we hope Vooks serves as a bridge, inspiring children to seek out the physical book and hold it in their hands. We believe in preserving the art of the picture book, not competing with it.
Why Curation Matters in a Digital World
In an age of endless scrolling and algorithm-driven feeds, curation is an act of care. We don’t mass-produce content. We don’t rush the process. And we don’t say yes simply to fill a library. We choose carefully, because children deserve thoughtfully crafted stories—and parents deserve a digital option that aligns with their values.
Selecting and curating titles is where that commitment begins.
