Social Emotional Learning Unit (PDF Download)

We hope you find this unit useful as you help children learn how to express their emotions in a positive and growing way. Remember to the world you are a teacher, but to your students and to us at Vooks, you are a hero.

  • Pre-Assessment: The pre-assessment is designed to provide practical information about students’ knowledge, understanding, ability to identify feelings, express them in a thoughtful manner, and know who they can go to when they need help with their feelings.
    • Writing and Drawing What Would You Do Scenarios - 4 example scenarios and customizable template included.
  • Social Emotional Learning Activities: Young children may not have the vocabulary to talk about how they are feeling. Instead they communicate their feelings in other ways. Offering alternative ways to help children express their feelings will help you understand them.
    • Sequencing Feelings - Picture books are a great way to discuss feelings and help kids learn how to recognize other people’s feelings through facial expressions. We have provided sequencing activities for the following three Vooks titles: Slumberkins: Bigfoot, The Best Seat, We Are (Not) Friends
    • About Me Craft - Help children build authentic relationships with their classmates with this craft.
    • Feelings Response Chart - 4 column chart to help students understand their feelings.
    • Transition Activities - coloring sheet, caring and kindness flower craft, kindness dice, circle what scares you, creatures full of feelings, puppets, connecting activity
  • Post-Assessment: The post-assessment is designed to provide practical information about students’ knowledge, understanding, ability to identify feelings, express them in a thoughtful manner, and know who they can go to when they need help with their feelings
    • Writing and Drawing What Would You Do Scenarios - 4 example scenarios and customizable template included.
  • Parent Letter: Customizable note to send home to parents explaining what their children have been learning about to expressing their feelings and who can help them deal with those feelings. Also included is a parent tip sheet about Social Emotional Learning at home.
